Cleaner Air Oregon Advisory Committee meets February 2 in Salem

Portland, OR—The Cleaner Air Oregon Advisory Committee will hold its third meeting on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, in Salem to continue addressing Oregon’s industrial air toxics regulatory reform. The committee’s role is to provide advice to state regulators and health experts on more than twenty policy decisions as the agencies re-write state air toxics regulations to incorporate standards that better protect human health

The advisory committee will hear technical briefings and provide input on key topics in the regulatory overhaul, including:

  • Screening and risk assessment, including where cumulative risks should be included in an air toxics permitting program.
  • Implementation of air toxics permitting program to ensure health air quality for all of Oregon’s communities.
  • Options for rules to consider impacts to sensitive populations, such as children and the elderly, people with low income, and communities of color..

The Oregon Health Authority and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality formed the advisory committee as part of the Cleaner Air Oregon initiative Governor Kate Brown announced on April 6, 2016.
The advisory committee meeting scheduled on Dec. 8 in Portland was cancelled due to inclement weather. An additional meeting has been scheduled on June 7. To ensure that adequate time is provided to collect and consider  necessary data and public input, the proposed air toxics regulations are expected to be presented to the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission in early 2018 instead of December 2017.
